Vibrant health is a key component of maximizing life and well-being and should be something we all want to attain and maintain well into our mature years. Most of us already know that if the physical body is not properly maintained, it will eventually break down. Just like our motor vehicle needs the right fuel and regular maintenance to keep functioning well, so too does our physical body. Without the finest nutritional fuel and maintenance, our health will eventually fail, leaving us feeling crappy and under performing.
The truth is, most of us are aware that we don't eat as well as we could/should (c'mon now, tell the truth and shame and the devil😊) . Stop for a moment and honestly evaluate the meal choices you made this week, in fact, simply do it for today. What did you eat for breakfast? Actually, did you even eat breakfast? What was for lunch? What are you planning to eat for dinner? Using the information you have, determine if your typical food choices are fuel to promote health and longevity or fuel that will eventually cause your health to be destroyed and or a reliance on prescripton drugs as "medicine".
Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food.
—HIPPOCRATES
The fact that wounds heal, bones mend, nails grow and colds wear off, is testament that the body is in a constant state of repair and regeneration. Therefore, the food on your plate should heal and not destroy; bring health and not disease. Hippocrates, "The Father Of Medicine" said it this way "let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food". My readers, there is a prescription (Rx) for health and longevity called a HEALTH-PROMOTING DIET. It is a highly recommended and effective non-drug health approach that helps the body to heal itself and prevent many other health problems from occurring.
If we continue on the current dietary trajectory, it seems almost certain that we will develop one of the Big Three (heart disease, cancer or diabetes). According to the World Health Organization, Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. Yet we ask ourselves, what is happening? Why is the health of our people declining so dramatically? Let's take a hard look at what's on our plates and that may give us a very good idea as to why we find ourselves in this predicament. The good news is that it can change!
Reform Your Pantry... Reform Your Health
By changing just a few eating habits you can make a big difference to your health. You don't need to make huge changes to eat healthier and you don't have to change your habits all at the same time. The important thing is to begin to feed your body the nutrients it truly deserves.
Here are some healthy changes you can put into action today
Instead of having hot dogs, nuggets or luncheon meat with white bread for breakfast, have some oats or a Very Coconut Smoothie or an Alkaline Special or Green Machine (recipes available with our L.E.A.N Program ™ menu plans)
Cut back on animal-based foods like butter, bacon, and untrimmed meats, as well as pantry staples like cookies and crackers. Saturated and trans fats can raise your bad cholesterol level and increase your risk of heart disease. To add more good fats to your diet, snack on almonds instead of chip
Trade sugary drinks for water. Every cell in your body needs it to work properly and it helps your digestion. Start and end each day with a 8 oz glass of water and keep your water bottle with you during the day. Need more flavor? Drop a slice of lemon or lime into your water or add pieces of your favorite fruit
When selecting your fruits, include those that are low glycemic but also high in fiber as they make you feel fuller longer and a great way to help you keep off extra pounds. Fruits such as apples with the skin, raspberries and strawberries are high in fiber and low glycemic
Most green leafy vegetables are alkaline and low in calories too. If you are one that regularly indulges in red meat, processed and junk food, its about time that you include more alkaline foods in your diet. Disease will not thrive in an alkaline environment so its important to watch what's on your plate. Talking about watching what's on your plate, did you know that vegetables should fill half your plate at every meal?
